How does a wood burning stove work

All of the best wood burning stoves do exactly as they say, they burn wood. The wood is put into an airtight unit with glass doors to let you watch the dancing flames within. The stove needs to be installed by a profession as the fire is fed by air coming in through vents and the smoke and gases leave through the chimney or flue. If you do this yourself and do it wrong, than it can be very dangerous.

There are certain types of wood that are used to burn in the wood burning stove. The wood is called wood fuel. Most people use logs that come in about 4-6 inches in diameter. You can use some kind of manufactured wood pellets  that are like compressed sawdust with some stoves and another option is to use graded wood chips which are the pieces of wood that come out of the chopper that tree cutters use to cut up pieces of trees they cut down. Even though most wood burning stoves are used mostly for heating there are those that can be adapted to use for cooking as well.

Reducing the risks of any kind of fire or smoke inhalation

In order to keep everyone safe there are a few things to watch out for.

  • You must make sure that your stove does not leak out any smoke. Exposure to the smoke can cause eye, era, nose and throat irritations and nausea and dizziness. If you smell smoke then you need to check if there is a block in the chimney.
  • You must have a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector installed.
  • You should only burn wood that is clean from salt water, has not been treated or painted, and only wood no paper or plastics.
  • The wood should be stored outdoors but off of the ground
  • Make sure to have the stove inspected and cleaned once a year

If you follow all of the above precautions you will improve the efficiency of your wood burning stove and will enjoy its warmth and style for many years to come.
